Get Started with BPM+

Whether you author clinical guidelines, perform institutional quality management, or engage in population health management, we encourage you to join this community to help advance the state of practice.

What is BPM+

Most organizational guidelines are expressed in natural language, with inherent ambiguities and inconsistencies that are difficult to identify and address. The use of formal modeling languages addresses these concerns and gives more precise guidance that is easier to implement, validate, and automate. The BPMN, CMMN, and DMN standards were carefully designed to complement each other and are known together as BPM+. While the standards can be used separately, the BPM+ Health community of practice uses them to speed up long, ambiguous healthcare processes to improve the quality and consistency at the point of care.

Many organizations require a combination of process models for their prescriptive workflows, case models for their reactive activities, and decision models for their more complex business rules. These organizations will benefit from using the three standards in combination, selecting which one is most appropriate for each activity modeling type. BPMN, CMMN, and DMN constitute the "big three" of process improvement standards.

5 Ways BPM+ Can Help You

  1. Get rid of ambiguity by using easily readable diagrams
  2. Provide a common ground for discussion and agreement on project scopes and business decisions
  3. Automate the development and execution of decision systems
  4. Create a shared library of processes, definitions, and business rules to train new employees
  5. Fast track your organization's process improvement efforts by reaching agreement through unambiguous models

BPM+ Standards

The Business Process Modeling Notation™ (BPMN™) is a graphical notation that depicts the steps in a business process. BPMN depicts the end-to-end flow of a business process. The notation has been specifically designed to coordinate the sequence of processes and the messages that flow between different process participants in a related set of activities.
Case Management Model and Notation™ (CMMN™) defines a common meta- model and notation for modeling and graphically expressing a case as well as an interchange format for exchanging case models among different tools. CMMN is intended to capture the common elements that case management products use, while also taking into account current research contributions on case management. Known as an Adaptive Case Management, CMMN aids in the decision-making process through suggestions, yet keeps humans firmly in the driver's seat. CMMN is centered around living information and relationships, while traditional business processes are centered around a-priori-defined activity sequences.
Decision Model and Notation™ (DMN™) is a modeling language and notation for the precise specification of business decisions and business rules. DMN is easily readable by the different types of people involved in decision management. These include business professionals who specify the rules and monitor their application; business analysts.

Getting Started

Whether you are familiar with BPMN, CMMN, or DMN or not you can reference our materials below to start adopting BPM+ today. Our community working groups created the following resources to give a solid foundation and determine where to start:

Field Guide to
Shareable Clinical Pathways

The Field Guide leverages standard- based methods from OMG, HL7, and HSPC to represent and share the clinical knowledge. By applying formal models to healthcare practice patterns, the information becomes computer-consumable and automatable, giving doctors and clinicians evidence-based information at the point of care.

BPM+ Adoption
Guide & Playbook

The BPM+ Health Adoption Playbook is offered as a companion to the OMG Healthcare Domain Task Force's Field Guide to Shareable Clinical Pathways and provides guidance and tools to assist organizations with the adoption of shareable clinical pathways to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of care.

Readiness Assessment
Maturity Model (RAMM)

The RAMM is a foundational tool that can be leveraged to assess an organization's current capability state and facilitate an evolution toward desired capabilities. Those involved in IT modernization efforts should find this artifact useful when used alongside the Adoption Guide and Playbook.

Case Studies

The time lag between the latest medical knowledge and the integration into clinical workflows has devastating consequences for all of healthcare's leading actors (Patient, Provider, Payer) & stands a firm barrier to realizing value-based care outcomes. Learn how BPM+ is being deployed to heal healthcare today.

Our Community of Practice Improves the Quality & Consistency of Healthcare.

The BPM+ Health™ community of practice improves healthcare by applying business process modeling standards to clinical best practices, care pathways, and workflows directly at the point of care. By documenting their care pathways and workflows using open, standards-based notations, practitioners can discover and share care pathways and workflows accurately and consistently. Through our collaboration with professional organizations, academia, clinical societies, and healthcare providers, we develop and pilot standards-driven healthcare process automation techniques.
