Clinical Workflow Optimization: The Next Frontier in Healthcare

Did you know it takes 17 years on average for new clinical guidelines to be fully implemented into the healthcare ecosystem?

Members of BPM+ Health are working together to turn printed clinical care guidelines into digitally executable models using IT industry standards. The goal is to give doctors and clinicians evidence-based information at the point of care to improve healthcare outcomes.

Attend these sessions at HIMSS20 to see clinical care pathway modeling in action!

Sessions & DEMOS on the HIMSS20 agenda

1. A BPM+ Health use case will be presented on managing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) -

Title: Veteran Care Without Boundaries
Location: Interoperability Showcase | Hall E | Booth 8300
Time: Tours start every 45 minutes

Description: This use case will demonstrate the automation and orchestration of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines for CKD using industry standards (BPM+, FHIR, Terminology, CDS-Hooks). Veterans’ journeys will be orchestrated in real time: Identifying emerging risks, Mitigating CKD impacts, Preventing a lifetime of costly dialysis appointments. It includes end user application workflow integration & plug n’ play CDS tools from our ecosystem of partners. This vignette will show the art of the possible for BPM+ process automation and knowledge delivery built on a FHIR-based digital health platform.

Participants: Perspecta, RedHat, Trisotech, MDIX, CareNexus, The Medical Algorithims Company, Motive, Microsoft

2. A BPM+ Health session will be presented on using standards to automate the delivery of best practice guidelines across a patient's journey -

Title: Care Without Boundaries: Using Standards to Automate Data, Knowledge and Process Exchange across a Federated Landscape
Location: Interoperability Showcase | Hall E | Booth 8300 - Education Theater
Time: Tuesday, March 10, 2020 from 1:30 - 2:30

Description: Healthcare standards are critical to overcoming system, role, and geographical boundaries that currently exist today. They do this by:

  • collecting, standardizing, and exchanging individual records across a federated data landscape;
  • evaluating these records against executable knowledge artifacts (e.g., clinical decision support rules);
  • using standardized data and best practices for the automated execution of processes, workflows, clinical pathways, and protocols to inform cross-boundary activities such as care coordination.

This session will focus on the incorporation of the standards for terminology (LOINC, SNOMED CT), data exchange (HL7 FHIR), process automation (BPM+ Health), and knowledge endpoints (CQL, CDS-Hooks) to automate the delivery of best practice guidelines across the patient's journey to make healthcare cheaper, better, faster and more satisfying for all stakeholders.

  • Aggregate, standardize and optimize patient data to drive interoperability, computations, automation, and analytics
  • Invoke third-party endpoints, such as clinical decision support rules expressed through a CDS-Hooks interface
  • Demonstrate the orchestration and automation of clinical practice guidelines using full technology stack modeling and process engineering standards
  • Provide reusable business process models and executable knowledge artifacts that automate menial human tasks in healthcare workflows
  • Share models that operate with population health science at the individual patient level

Participants: Smile CDR, University of Utah, Wolters Kluwer, HSPC, MITRE, Amida, Red River, Perspecta Labs

3. A BPM+ Health session will be presented on using models to diagnose and manage anemia -

Title: A Sharable Clinical Pathway for Anemia Management
Location: Innovation Live (Hall E | Booth 8200)
Time: Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 11:45 - 12:05

Description: A sharable clinical pathway is a visual decision model that is both human readable and machine automatable. Such a standardized workflow can improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare processes. This session will present models for the diagnosis and management of anemia and demonstrate BPM+ process automation capability.

Participants: Trisotech

4. A BPM+ Health session will be presented on the BPM+ Health storyline -

Title: From Evidence to Encounter: Accelerating Clinical Quality
Location: Interoperability Showcase | Hall E | Booth 8300 - Education Theater
Time: Thursday, March 12, 2020 from 11:30 - 12:30

Description: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is participating in the BPM+ Health community around the applied use of formal expression languages to document care pathways in a way that makes them easier to consume, validate compliance, and implement across sites of care. This session will discuss how existing paper-based pathways can be adapted, allowing for improved care within VA and more effective care transitions between VA and external partners, such as community care providers. This will help mitigate inherent risks and gaps in care that might occur across care transitions, improve overall VA compliance with established industry clinical best practices, and position VA to adopt new care pathways more effectively and rapidly.

Participants: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, American College of Emergency Physicians
